Student protests erupted outside the South African Parliament during a meeting to propose higher education fees. Police fired stun grenades and struck protesters as they tried to get inside the Parliament building.
The proposed tuition increase could be as much as 12%, making education inaccessible for the poor. South Africa has a disproportionate amount of wealthy white families and poor black families, and students say this tuition increase would prohibit even more black students from attending university.
At least 10 universities have been affected so far and protesters aren't backing down, but the fight has helped unify black and white students throughout the entire country.
