How Do Abortions Work?
Who Is Carly Fiorina?
Majority of Americans Want Planned Parenthood Funding
As Congress faces yet another potential government shutdown, new research indicates that a majority of Americans believe that government funding for Planned Parenthood should continue. According to a new poll from Pew Research, 60 percent of Americans say the federal government should continue funding the women's health organization, while 32 percent of those polled said funding should stop. It's an issue that is pretty clearly divided along party lines with 83 percent of Democrats and 64 percent of Independents polled expressing support for Planned Parenthood government funding. This contrasts with 66 percent of Republicans who said any budget deal should not include funding.
On Tuesday, Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood, testified before a Congressional committee and defended the organization. Richards said Planned Parenthood has come under attack from anti-abortion groups that are using deceptively edited videos to cast the organization as a ruthless, money-hungry group. The series of videos, released by Center for Medical Progress, accuse Planned Parenthood of profiting off the fetal tissue taken from abortions. Richards defended the practice in her written testimony, saying that this practice is done at 1 percent of Planned Parenthood clinics, but nonetheless, it has been a vital resource for medical research. Richards also underscored that government funding is only applied to abortion procedures in the cases of rape, incest, and when the woman's life is in danger. She emphasized the score of other health care services offered to Planned Parenthood patients, including cancer screenings, birth control, and testing and treatment for sexually-transmitted infections.
Although House Republicans are making a stand here, it's unlikely any legislation defunding Planned Parenthood will get anywhere. The White House has said it will veto any such bills that make it out of Congress.
