Following the second Republican presidential debate, Carly Fiorina is gaining traction in polls. Arguably the most memorable part of Fiorina's debate performance was how she responded to previous comments made by Donald Trump about her looks.
Fiorina is running as a Washington outsider-a savvy business executive who can bring a needed fresh perspective to the White House. Fiorina served as CEO of Hewlett-Packard from 1999 to 2005 and as the first-ever VP at AT&T; before that. Fiorina's critics across the political spectrum are quick to point out that Fiorina oversaw 30,000 lose their jobs as HP merged with Compaq.
On social issues, Fiorina mostly falls in line with conservative opinion. In that same televised debate, she hammered home her anti-abortion views, calling for the dismantling of Planned Parenthood. She made some serious accusations against the health non-profit and certain anti-Planned Parenthood videos that have been circulating this summer. Although Fiorina has earned support from some Republican LGBT groups, she has voted against same-sex marriage legalization and some equality measures.
In terms of foreign policy, Fiorina made waves this week at a national security forum. During an hour-long address, she said, "We are the only nation in human history that does not conquer territory, but liberates people." As summarized by the Washington Post, this is a skewered view of American history, at best. Regardless, Fiorina said President Obama is simply not strong enough on national security in 2015 and there's a need for new leadership.
Ultimately, it will be interesting to see how Fiorina's campaign fares in the season to come. She's the only woman candidate among the GOP hopefuls and her post-debate surge in the polls may continue. Everything she says from here on out, though, will be more scrutinized than ever.
