Lithuania is the largest and southernmost Baltic state. In 1990, it was the first Soviet state to gain independence, just one year before the Soviet Union collapsed.
Lithuania has one of the lowest GDPs in the European Union and has been struggling with mass emigration as well. In August of this year, thousands of troops gathered on the border of Lithuania and Russia, raising fears that a New Cold War may not be far off.
