There's no sugar coating it, Anchorage, Alaska is freezing cold in the winter... and sometimes in the spring and fall too. But there's a lot more to this most northern U.S. city than you think.
The view from here is better than any other city in the world. The ocean, mountains, and glaciers, take hiking to a whole new level. There are over 50 glaciers within Anchorage's city limits alone. Kanai Fjords is home to the largest icefield in the world and includes over 700,000 acres of gorgeous scenery. In Chugach State Park there are close to 30 different hiking trails, ranging from day treks to weekend backpacking trips.
Think you've had the best seafood in the U.S.? Not until you've been to Alaska. Most locations in the country only have access to crab after its been frozen, shipped thousands of miles, and had the price marked up to a scandalous amount. In Anchorage, you can have access to fresh crab, among other delicious seafood, at a reasonable price year round.
The deliciousness doesn't stop with seafood. Ever heard of a reindeer sausage? Served with sauerkraut and spicy brown mustard, this hot dog will have you questioning whether you should ever go back to the pork version.
There is wildlife galore in Anchorage. Moose regularly cross the roads at their leisure, which can provide a great photo opp, but make sure to approach with caution. They will likely do more damage to your car than your car will do to them.
98 percent of the U.S. grizzly bear population resides in Alaska. While it's not recommended that you go out looking for bears on your own, there are guided tours you can take to view them in the wild.
The annual Fur Rendezvous Winter Festival, a 10 day celebration of Anchorage's growth and progress as a city, has an Alaskan version of running with the bulls. Participants run for their lives down the streets while they are chased by a stampede of caribou!
Anchorage is a truly unique city with hidden gems around every corner. Visiting will definitely help you check off more than a few bucket list items.
