Why Do People Still Deny Climate Change?
Which Countries Produce The Most Clean Energy?
In 2012, the Economist Intelligence Unit published the Green City Index report. The group's objective was to determine what factors contribute to cleanliness in the major regions of the world. Included in the report were the cleanest cities on each continent: Copenhagen, Denmark; Curitiba, Brazil; Singapore; San Francisco, California; and Accra, Ghana (though Accra was named the cleanest city in Africa, it did not rank "well above average" like the other cities listed).
So what were some of the distinguishing characteristics of these cities? High-scoring cities, particularly those in Europe, had strict limitations on automobile emissions as well as expansive public transit, bike lanes, and pedestrian paths. Other cities had robust recycling programs, including the one in Curitiba, which allows bus riders to use recycled materials in exchange for bus tokens. Singapore earned a top score partially due to its high-density infrastructure. For a city with such a highly concentrated population, its recycling, waste, and water treatment utilities are all state of the art. In all of these cities, leaders have made significant investments in environmentally friendly policies, which are supported by an active community that is on board.
