Watch more: How Hitler Tried To Create The Master Race
"The Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola is one of America's most unusual prisons because it is in some ways a plantation. Once you walk past Angola's front gate, you can't help but feel like you've gone back in time to another South," are narrator and journalist Jeffery Goldberg's opening lines to the short documentary above.
The United States has the highest rate of incarceration in the world and Louisiana has the highest incarceration rate of the country. The majority of those incarcerated are African American males. This creates a complex situation for Angola, the inmates with life sentences and nothing to lose, and the new Angola warden Burl Cain.
Once a predictably violent inmate community, watch above to see how warden Cain changed the climate of the prison through religion and what he refers to as "moral rehabilitation". To many, Angola is a mere representation of the crippling and biased criminal justice system in America. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments below.
