In 1994, British smuggler David McMillan was arrested in Bangkok, Thailand and charged with heroin trafficking. He was held in Klong Prem Central Prison (shown here), known as the "Bangkok Hilton" which had more than 12,000 inmates.
Even though he ate well and had his own servant, McMillan was scheduled to receive the death sentence. In 1996, using a hacksaw and bamboo ladders, he breached seven walls to escape, the only Westerner ever to escape.
Despite a second arrest in Australia, he now lives in freedom in England with his family.
