The Paresev: The Homemade Flying Tricycle Pilots Built

The Rogallo paraglider required a new way of flying. Milt Thompson and Neil Armstrong wanted to be the first to try.

In an attempt to get away from the iconic but imperfect splashdown landings, NASA developed the Rogallo paraglider wing for the Gemini capsule. To learn to fly this new vehicle, test pilots Milt Thompson and Neil Armstrong built a homemade trainer and took it up in the air.

For a lot more on the Rogallo wing program check out the (rather long) blog post over on Vintage Space.

And there's loads of olde timey space to dig into on my blog, Vintage Space, too!
