The U.S. prison system doesn't exactly have a stellar reputation. We have a higher incarceration rate than any other country, and as many as 20,000 U.S. inmates have protested against slavery-like wages, abusive guards, overcrowding in cells, and poor healthcare.

But as bad as our prison system is, it's not the worst one in the world. Within the last 10 years, horrible prison conditions have persisted in many other countries. What are some of the worst prisons in modern history and what makes them so bad?
