The History Of America's Cuba Embargo
With US-Cuban relations slowly improving, some hint that the end of the Cuban embargo might be near. Here's a timeline to better grasp the embargo on Cuba.
Gov. Cuomo Leads Historic Trade Delegation to Cuba
On Monday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo will arrive in Cuba, accompanied by business executives and industry leaders. Although his trip will last barely a day, it's the latest symbolic display of the thawing relations between the U.S. and Cuba.
As part of a whirlwind 26-hour long trip, Mr. Cuomo is bringing a delegation of New York business owners to take advantage of the new relations between the two countries. Officials from JetBlue Airways, the Plattsburgh International Airport, Pfizer, and MasterCard will all be taking part in the meetings. Several other big name corporations, including Netflix and Amazon have also expressed interest in opening their services to Cuban customers. The market is considerably different from the U.S., as the average Cuban earns roughly $250 per year.
In addition, Candace S. Johnson, the chief executive from the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY will also be in attendance in Havana. Roswell has long followed Cuba's medical research into vaccines and immunology. However, meaningful collaboration has been very difficult under the U.S.-Cuba relationship.
Still, these economic shifts will take a good amount of time. While President Obama has declared he will remove Cuba from the official list of states that sponsor terror, it is up to Congress to pass legislation that will repeal the trade embargo. From there, it will most likely take years for the U.S. and Cuban officials to outline what exactly the economic relationship will look like.

"The Cuban government offered measured praise for President Obama's decision to clear the country from a list of terrorism-sponsoring nations but gave no indication following the announcement whether it would accelerate plans to normalize diplomatic relations."
