Everything looked perfect: The blue curling wave sparkling in the Hawaiian sun, the pro surfer stroking into it and briefly riding the center. Then the whole thing turned ugly.
A ginormous wave at the Pipeline on O'ahu's North Shore crashed over Florida pro surfer Evan Geiselman, throwing him from his board and knocking him unconscious.

The Pipeline - or the Pipe for short - produces huge, hollow waves that break in shallow water. Those beautiful waves are also notoriously dangerous, and multiple surfers have lost their lives here. Geiselman nearly did, too.
Champion bodyboarder Andre Botha paddled over to Geiselman immediately and pulled him to the surface. He managed to administer CPR and help keep the unconscious surfer's head above water despite the huge waves breaking over them. Other surfers, including Mick Fanning, and lifeguards formed a flotilla to get Geiselman to shore.
