The World At Night Contest Winners
May 17, 2012 --
Earlier this month, the winners of the Third International Earth and Sky Photo Contest on Dark Sky Importance were announced. The contest, organized by The World at Night, Astronomers Without Borders, Global Astronomy Month and the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, pulled in over 600 entries from 50 countries.
The entries were judged on the basis that elements of the night sky and a notable location or landmark on Earth were captured in the photograph. In an effort to raise awareness for the increasing problem of light pollution from major cities and to showcase the beauty of astronomy, the photos were judged in two categories: "Beauty of the Night Sky" and "Against the Lights."
Here are the winners...
Many thanks to the organizers of Astronomers Without Borders for giving Discovery News permission to re-publish these photographs. High-resolution versions can be found on the TWAN contest website.
