Often the only viable choice for couples who wish to have their own biological children, commercial surrogacy is a multi-billion dollar industry. In India alone, it amounts to more than 2 billion dollars and about 5,000 surrogate children per year. So why is India now considering a ban on commercial surrogacy services for both singles and foreign couples?
