The first images this year of a great white shark off of Cape Cod were taken on Tuesday, and they're terrifying.
Great white shark numbers have been growing around Cape Cod for the past several years as seal populations rebound from being hunted to near extinction. The sharks usually start showing up in early summer and this year is no exception.
With its gaping mouth with rows and rows of razor-sharp teeth, "Freckles" might seem a pretty tame name for a great white, but that's the name given to the shark by scientists Greg Skomal and John Chisholm from the Mass Division of Marine Fisheries, who took the GoPro footage.
The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, along with the scientists, are starting the second year of a five-year white shark population study.
Freckles, a 15-foot female, has been ID'd and cataloged for the study, they said on their Facebook page.
