Officials Urge Shots: A 14-year-old girl who had been admitted to a hospital in Minneapolis on Christmas Eve died from complications of influenza on Tuesday.
Carly Christenson, a ninth-grader from St. Louis Park, Minn., was the second teen to die from the flu in 10 days in Minnesota. She had played on her school's basketball team and had been an otherwise healthy girl. She had contracted influenza Type A.
The death was the state's fifth flu death of the season.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most of the country is experiencing higher-than-average levels of the flu - "nearing what have been peak levels ... during moderately severe seasons in the past."
Health officials are urging residents to get the flu shot. According to Minnesota health officials, the vaccine is 60 percent effective against the flu in healthy adults. via Star Tribune
