Citing the stability that marriage - gay or straight - provides children that allows them to thrive and be healthy, the American Academy of Pediatricians has updated its policy statement to show its support for same-sex marriage.
"The AAP believes there should be equal opportunity for every couple to access the economic stability and federal supports provided to married couples to raise children," Dr. Benjamin Siegel, chair of the AAP Committee on Psychosocial Aspects of Child and Family Health, said in a press release.

The group says that scientific research shows that children develop normally when the child is wanted, the parents are committed to shared responsibility for the child, and the parents have social and financial support. Sexual orientation is irrelevant to a child's well-being, the group said.
The policy statement also "supports pediatricians advocating for public policies that help all children and their parents, regardless of sexual orientation, build and maintain strong, stable, and healthy families that are able to meet the needs of their children," the authors wrote.
