The world-renowned Lowell Observatory is building the Discovery Channel Telescope (DCT) atop a 7800 feet-high cinder cone called Happy Jack, 40 miles southeast of Flagstaff, AZ. Set to be completed in 2010, the DCT -- as the name suggests -- is being built in partnership with us, an endeavor Discovery Space is very excited to be involved with.
The hi-tech 4.2 meter scope will do some incredible science, searching for potentially hazardous Near Earth Objects (NEOs), distant exoplanets, and will look deep into Pluto's neighborhood -- the Kuiper Belt -- for icy asteroids and dwarf planets.
In this special StarTales slideshow, Lowell Observatory has provided a selection of moon-based imagery and text from the professional astronomers working at the observatory.
