Twice As Many People Use Facebook to Come Out Than Before
As explored in this episode of TestTube News, Facebook is having a major impact on the way we both communicate and express our identity-our online persona anyway. Recently, Facebook released data indicating that more people than ever before are using the social media site to come out and declare their sexual orientation and gender identity. In a blog post, Facebook reported that more and more people are listing themselves as being interested in the same gender, interested in both multiple genders, and/or currently in a same-sex relationship.
There's also been a major increase in the number of people using Facebook's custom gender options to declare their gender identity. In the last year, about 800,000 U.S. users have updated their profiles with a custom gender or attraction to the same gender. The company also reported a 25 percent increase in users "liking" LGBT-supporting pages. Facebook attributes the trends to major events like World AIDS Day, Caitlyn Jenner's highly-publicized television interview in April, and the landmark Supreme Court same-sex marriage ruling.
Facebook Takes Step to Alert Users Against State-Sponsored Attacks
This week, Facebook announced that it would start warning users if it suspected their accounts were being deliberately cyber-attacked by a "state actor". The company's chief security officer wrote a post detailing the protections it would start offering its users. Following a similar measure that Google started in 2012, Facebook will now notify users if it believes they are the target of a state-sponsored attack of any kind. It's the latest initiative the company has taken to offer people more secure control over their accounts.
