How Important Is the African Union?
By some estimates there are 25 active conflicts currently going on across all of Africa. What are they? This episode of TestTube News gives a broad overview of some of the major ones that are taking place.
The terrorist group gained international attention after it kidnapped 300 schoolgirls in Nigeria in 2014. Since 2009, the group has killed an estimated 15 to 20,000 people, spanning across Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, and Niger. Boko Haram's objective is to overthrow the Nigerian government, which it claims is too Western-friendly and does not honor Islam.
Somalia Civil War
The Eastern African country has been in a state of turmoil since 1991, with the outbreak of civil war. The prolonged war has claimed upwards of 500,000 casualties and almost entirely destabilized the Somali government. It's also created an environment for al Qaeda affiliates and other terrorist groups to grow. Now, the government is starting to regain control as it fights the al-Shabab militant group with the support of the African Union.
The region of Darfur has been dominated by violence since 2003, when anti-government rebels attempted a coup. Afterward, the government effectively started committing genocide against Darfur's non-Arabic residents. In the years that have followed, 300,000 people have been killed and nearly 3 million have been displaced.
Currently, there are several factions vying for power in Libya. There's the internationally recognized body called the Tobruk government. There's also the Shura Council of Benghazi Revolutionaries, backed by the Muslim Brotherhood. Finally, ISIS holds a small portion of Libyan territory in the northern part of the country. These are the primary players, although there are some smaller rebel groups also fighting for control.
