Thanks to an innovative advertising project, some dogs and cats in England are finding new homes this week. The "Looking for You" campaign, currently installed at London's Westfield Stratford mall, features a digital dog who follows shoppers around - jumping from billboard to billboard.
DNews: Why We Love Dogs More Than Humans
Designed to promote pet adoption at the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, it's a clever collision of technology, advertising and that enduring psychological phenomenon known as warm fuzzies.
The interactive billboards are triggered by paper pamphlets handed to shoppers entering the mall. Inside the pamphlet is a tiny GPS chip that indicates the shoppers' location as they move around the plaza.
Depending on location, proximity and direction, the chip triggers pre-recorded video clips that pop up on nearby billboards. Walk around to the left of the display, and the dog follows you there. Approach a digital kiosk, and you'll get the old puppy-eyes routine up close.
Billboard ‘Points Out' Planes In Real Time
"Battersea rehomes animals all over the U.K. and beyond, and this could help encourage people to choose to rescue a dog," Carly Whyborn, head of operations at Battersea, told AdWeek. "We're using innovative technology in a way that has never been seen before, and we hope more of our abandoned animals find loving homes because of it."
The pet rescue group worked with several different ad agencies on the campaign, which is already a resounding success. The dog featured in the ads, Barley, has already found a home. Check out the promotional video, and prepare to have your heart professionally tugged.
