The movie "Deepwater Horizon," opening Friday, is a dramatic retelling of the worst oil disaster in U.S. history. The movie focuses on the tragedy of the initial well blowout, in which 11 men lost their lives, rather than the subsequent oil spill and environmental catastrophe. To ensure authenticity, engineers built a near-to-scale replica -- pictured here -- of the actual Deepwater Horizon offshore oil rig.
Offshore oil platforms (rig is a technically incorrect colloquial term) have been around since the late 19th century. Today, they're among the most technologically complex machines ever built by humankind. Here we look at some of the world's biggest oil platforms.
