At least 50 people died and 53 more were injured in what is the most lethal mass shooting in the history of the United States. In the early morning hours Sunday, Omar Mateen terrorized patrons Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla., for more than three hours before a SWAT team killed Mateen and ended the stand-off.
Police and federal investigation authorities are still investigating a motive. Was it a hate crime or a terror attack? The gunman pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State in a 911 call before the attack, but his father expressed that the sight of two gay men kissing outraged the mass murderer. Whatever the reason, if ever discovered, the tragedy is yet another grim chapter in the long history of mass shootings in the nation.
