This year there have been several murders in Bangladesh that all have one thing in common: the victims were atheists. The most recent victim was Ananta Bijoy Das, who moderated a blog called Mukto-Mona, which translates to "Free Thinkers." The blog's former moderator, Avijit Roy, was stabbed to death earlier this year.

The city of Sylhet in Bangladesh where these men were killed is a large Islamic spiritual center, and many believe these murders were religiously motivated. The suspects of these murders in particular are believed to be members of very hardline Islamic groups, who have been demanding the deaths of even more atheist writers, accusing them of blasphemy.
It's hard to understand how these attacks could keep happening with very little intervention from authorities. Some arrests have been made, but Bangladesh is 90% Muslim, so some of these atheist writers have actually been arrested as well, indicating that the government here tends to cater towards the Muslim population.
