Natalia Molchanova, considered to be the best free diver ever, is feared dead after disappearing in the Balearic Sea off the coast of Spain on Sunday, according to the New York Times.
Molchanova, 53, was diving with three others off Ibiza when she did not return to the surface. She had been diving without fins to a depth of about 115 feet.
According to the Times story, the water temperature in the area was around 79 degrees, but a layer of water below can be 10 to 15 degrees cooler. That transition can shock a diver's system and become deadly. Also, currents at and below the surface at the location are known to be unpredictable and dangerous.
Is it Possible to Hold Your Breath for 20 Minutes?
When Molchanova failed to surface after her dive, her fellow divers searched briefly before calling for help by radio. Private boats, the local coast guard and a helicopter continued the search. But by Tuesday afternoon, her son Alexey, also a free diver, made a statement saying she is now feared dead.
