Russia has had an unprecedented role in supporting the Syrian government through their civil war, which has been one of the deadliest conflicts in recent history. It's the first time since the end of the Cold War that Russia's military has stepped outside of the former borders of the Soviet Union.
Over the past year, Russia has refused to cease airstrikes in Syria, despite the civilian death toll, particularly in the city of Aleppo. Shortly after a new ceasefire resumed in Syria, a gunman shot and killed a Russian ambassador, in what many believe was a "revenge attack" for Russia's role in the conflict.
