Wild Dogs in Pa. Zoo Maul 2-yo Boy:

A Sunday morning visit to the Pittsburgh Zoo turned to tragedy yesterday after a mother, 34, placed her 2 year-old son onto a 4-to-5-foot high railing overlooking African Painted Dogs (Lycaon pictus) to give him a better view. The boy fell off the railing and onto a mesh barrier and then over the barrier into the exhibit, about 11 feet below, where he was immediately mauled by the pack of dogs. Police are not certain whether it was the attack or the fall that killed the boy. Zoo keepers immediately called the dogs and seven of the 11 in the pack drew away, with three more taking slightly longer. One dog however continued its aggressive attack and police ended up shooting the animal. "Steve Feldman, a spokesman for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, said no one he's spoken to can recall any deaths of children at an accredited zoo over the last 40 years or more," reported the AP.
