Explosions on the sun shoot plasma hundreds of thousands of miles into space and, thanks to NASA, we have a front row seat. The Solar Dynamic Observatory sits at a safe distance and watches our sun. You may be surprised by how much we can learn from such a mission, not to mention the incredible video of a star in action.

The sun is a constant ball of super-heated action, and occasionally it throws massive plasma waves out into space. Here we watch a beautiful eruption on the surface of the sun, and though it may seem small here, the U.K.'s The Register is said it exploded a "half million miles into space."
