Team 'Gimp Monkeys' Make First All-Disabled Ascent of El Capitan
"We're not going for the cause of disabled people, we're just going because we all like to climb."
“We are climbers first," says Arc'teryx athlete Craig DeMartino, “disabled second." Certainly, the style of their amazing ascent of Zodiac on El Capitan in Yosemite underlies this point. “We're not going to raise awareness," DeMartino continues, “we're not going for the cause of disabled people, we're just going because we all like to climb."
And in many ways, the climb is a great equalizer. “Everything is hard on the wall," Pete Davis explains, from going to the bathroom to sleeping, to digging food out of the haul bag. But “Put a happy face on, get the right attitude" Davis says, “and it's no big deal."
