Soldiers Dismissed for Obesity: DNews Nugget
Soldiers Dismissed for Obesity: Obesity is a national epidemic that could weaken the country's national security. According to the Washington Post, obesity is now the leading cause of ineligibility for military service. So far in 2012, more than 1,600 soldiers were kicked out of the Army — 16 times the amount expelled in 2007.
And since 2012, the number of overweight or obese military personnel as more than tripled. Currently, one in five troops have been diagnosed as overweight or obese.
"A healthy and fit force is essential to national security," said Cmdr. Leslie Hull-Ryde, a Pentagon spokeswoman. "Our service members must be physically prepared to deploy on a moment's notice anywhere on the globe to extremely austere and demanding conditions." So far that does not seem to be the case. – via Gawker and The Washington Post
