Quantum mechanics — or the movement and research into sub-atomic particles — is where the crazy stuff happens in physics today. Using what we know of quantum theories, these particles want to move from high-energy states (like the Big Bang) to lower-energy states (like the universe after the Big Bang). The problem with that, however, is the universe isn't the lowest (or most desirable) energy state for our particles.
