Once Almost Gone, Cod Returning: Twenty years ago, the Newfoundland cod industry was shut down because there weren't enough cod anymore: the population collapsed from over fishing. But scientists are finally seeing signs that the cod population is coming back, reports CTVnews.com.
Warmer waters in some northern areas are helping to boost the size and longevity of the fish, experts say.
Cod expert George Rose told the news outlet: "Biologically, ecologically we're seeing a major shift back to a system that will eventually become dominated by capelin (a staple of the cod diet) and cod. … I think we are seeing the beginnings of a recovery now."
