Excellent Idea of the Day: At-Work Sleeping Pod
Lay back for 10-20 minutes in this pod when that after-lunch lull kicks in at the office.
You're getting sleepy, very, very sleepy... at work. Don't worry, it's cool, just jump into the CalmSpace pod for ten minutes and you'll be set. That's what designer Marie-Virginie Berbet had in mind when she created this pod for Haworth, an office furniture company.
The structure is a stand-alone capsule that has a futuristic composite mattress lining a corner of the interior. Ambient light in the pod slowly morphs into different shades of yellow, pink and blue to create a relaxing atmosphere, all while an acoustic foam lining keeps noise out.
To keep people from oversleeping, the CalmSpace pod can be programmed to wake the napper after 10 to 20 minutes. Why not more? Berbet's background in neuropharmacology has taught her that any nap over 30 minutes leaves one feeling groggy, instead of refreshed.
The pod debuted in France, but there's no news on whether it will be available for offices everywhere anytime soon. The CalmSpace was tested as a prototype at the call center of France's Telecom Orange in Lyon. Because we all know if anyone needs a good nap to keep grumpiness at bay, it's call center workers.
This nap pod will soothe you to sleep for a 10-20 minute nap. Marie-Virginie Berbe
