The humble license plate has not really seen any advances in design since 1901, when state of New York required automobile owners to draw up their own plates. But now former Department of Motor Vehicles computer system architect Brian Bannister and former South Carolina DMV administrator David Findlay want to change that. They’re proposing that license plates become electronic devices that can be tracked and updated instantly with status changes. In other words, if you don’t pay your registration fee on time, the display on the plate could flash “expired” or “uninsured,” alerting authorities.
