Drone Takes Dog for Walkies
This isn’t for everyone. But if you have a well-behaved dog, like the golden retriever in this video, you could leash it to a drone and have it walked around the block. That’s what New Yorker Jeff Meyers, an interaction designer, did with this sweet pup. A video he posted on Vimeo shows a person programming a route on an tablet, hooking up his dog to a drone and then monitoring the walk using a camera as well as tracking the animal on a map using, presumably, a GPS device.
In all honesty, it’s not a practical or even safe application for a drone-dog pairing. Even though the retriever in the video is an amiable, docile beast, the drone wouldn’t be able to prevent the dog from darting across traffic, nor would it be able keep other more aggressive dogs from badgering the family pet. As a dog owner, I can attest to the myriad situations that pop up daily on a walk that a drone wouldn’t be able to deal with.
However, this video does demonstrate the inevitable. Robots are automating many aspects of human life and work. A robotic, autonomous dog-walker is not too far-fetched. Of course, as Anna Marie Alcantara points out on Mashable, there is the messy matter of dog poo. Maybe someone will also invent a robotic pooper-scooper.
