Archaeologists Denounce Doomday: DNews Nuggets
Archaeologists to Confront 2012 Hype: It seems that the ancient Mayans and prophesies of doom go hand-in-hand, so it may be shocking to hear that the Mayans never predicted doomsday (true story). The “West’s messianic thinking” has misinterpreted the culmination of the end of the 13th Baktun (the 13th cycle of the Long Count calendar), not as a time of re-birth, but as a time of death and destruction.
Needless to say, the real experts are frustrated by the disinformation being peddled by a few doomsayers, so they are holding a special meeting over the weekend in the Guatemalan city of Antigua to discuss the end of this ancient cycle and confront the doomsday hype.
“We reject 100 per cent that this is the end of the world — it’s the end of a cycle and beginning of the 14th Baktun (Mayan cycle),” said archaeologist Rosendo Morales.
